5 Futuristic Construction Technologies

The construction industry keeps on evolving every year, and we can expect more of this because of the technological innovations that are slowly shaping the construction world.

There’s the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, Internet marketing strategies, robotics, smart cities, and many more. Indeed, this change is having an impact not only on those who are involved in construction, but it’s also affecting other industries as well. Allow us to discuss the five futurist construction technologies that have made our lives easier.

1. Smart Concrete

In some areas, the flood can be a huge problem, especially in places where there’s not enough outlet for the water to drain. The question becomes worse in highly urbanized areas because there’s less soil to absorb flood water. As a way to solve this problem, an asphalt product known as the “Topmix Permeable” was created.

Unlike other concrete that only absorbs 300 millimeters of water per hour, the Topmix is capable of absorbing 36,000 millimeters, and this is around 3,300 liters of water per minute. Aside from that, instead of sand, Topmix is a mixture of crushed granite carefully packed together. This allows the water to efficiently drain through the pieces of granite, which is then absorbed by the ground, going into the sewer system or accumulated in the water reserve.

Aside from reducing the possibilities of flooding, this also keeps the streets dry, making it safer for everyone. Furthermore, water can also be routed to the reservoir, and it can be used in several ways. The only issue with permeable concrete is that it’s only ideal for areas where it doesn’t get too cold because the cold temperature makes the concrete expand, which can destroy it.

Likewise, it also costs more to install, but cities can save a huge amount of this in the long run, as it would dramatically reduce flooding.

2. 3D Printing

Perhaps, one of the most futuristic construction technologies that we are already enjoying would be 3D printing. In fact, it has already reached the point where it has become mainstream. There are desktop machines now that are capable of printing 3D toys, jewelry, artificial limbs, and most importantly, machine parts.

However, what if you need to print something on a bigger scale? No need to worry about that anymore, as there is already 3D printer large enough capable of reproducing even a building.

3. Smart Roads

Yes, we all know about intelligent traffic cones, autonomous vehicles, and the like. There’s something better than that and could make these even more efficient– the smart roads. This is one of the most innovative ideas, where the road functions as a charger for electric vehicles.

There will be a large “power pad” installed on the road, and it can wirelessly charge electric cars. With this, there’s no need for refueling stations anymore.

4. Smart Brick

Developed by Kite Bricks, intelligent bricks are somewhat inspired by Lego. These are the building blocks that contain knobs which are located on top of them, and they can be connected similarly to how you can get with Lego bricks.

These are held in place with the use of rebar, that has pieces in different shapes strategically layered. Likewise, instead of using cement, these bricks are held together with a powerful double-sided adhesive. Wherein, located inside the building are the interchangeable panels that have patterns which can be attached to the bricks.

The good thing about these boards is you can quickly remove them when needed, and there are also pieces that can be utilized to build floors and ceilings. As for the center of the block, it’s empty which leaves enough space for plumbing pipes, insulation, and electrical wires. According to experts, this type of bricks enables greater versatility, better thermal energy control, and most especially, lower construction costs.

5. Robot Swarm Construction

The termites are considered to be the most ingenious nature builders. Even with a brain that’s the size of the grain of sand, it’s still capable of working alongside with hundreds of its mates to build complex structures. This is what captured the experts of Harvard robotics, and they developed small construction robotics programmed to work together as a swarm.

These robots are capable of building brick-like walls as they lift each brick and climb the wall, laying the block in an open spot. They also come with sensors that detect the presence of other robots.
